Neglect is the Top Form of Abuse in Iowa

Abuse in the form of neglect is defined as the failure of a parent or caretaker to provide adequate food, clothing, shelter, medical care or supervision when no physical injury to the child has occurred. Neglect is also considered the form of abuse when substances are found in a child’s system. Across the nation, Iowa is no exception, this is by far the most common form of child abuse, accounting for over 75% of confirmed cases. Sadly, is it the children whose very survival depends on the care they receive who are most at risk, children under 3 years old.

When identifying neglect, warning signs include:

  • malnourishment – constantly hungry and underweight or his/her belly is bloated
  • poor hygiene – dirty, matted or unwashed hair, body odor, unkempt appearance
  • inappropriate clothing – clothing not suitable to weather, clothing that is too big or small or missing key pieces such as shoes
  • health problems – untreated illnesses or injuries
  • repeatedly occurring injuries – bumps, bruises that happen regularly could indicate supervision isn’t happening in an unsafe environment
  • lack of supervision – young children often seen by themselves
  • unsuitable living environment – unsanitary or unsafe living conditions
  • developmental issues – delays in emotional growth, language delays and failure to meet other developmental milestones

Behavioral signs of neglect:

  • begging for or stealing food
  • frequently missing school
  • excessive anxiety or fear
  • taking on adult responsibilities
  • acting overly infantile
  • emotional detachment
  • difficulty forming relationships

It might be easy to dismiss some of these concerns, and yes, context is important. I can think of multiple times where my kids walked out of the house without combing their hair (and maybe even a time or two where they didn’t have their shoes) but if you are regularly concerned about a child and that nagging feeling that something isn’t right won’t go away, it is important to report your concerns.
