What does suspicious behavior in your neighborhood look like?
Take note if you see anyone exhibiting the following behaviors:

  • wandering neighborhoods – attempting to open doors
  • looking nervous – watching over their shoulders
  • lingering in odd areas of the neighborhood (behind bushes, between houses, in sheltered areas)
  • people in utility clothing but no utility vehicle in sight
  • carrying property at unusual hours especially if they seem to be hiding it
  • using binoculars or taking photographs of the area or homes
  • vehicle driving very slowly or aimlessly
  • abruptly changing behavior when seen
  • dressing inappropriately for the weather (big coats in the summer)
  • sitting in a vehicle for extended periods of time-conducting transactions in a vehicle
  • leaving packages/bags/items behind in an area
  • unusual mental or physical symptoms
  • unusual noises – screaming, yelling, gunshots, breaking glass
  • individuals in a heated argument – yelling/cursing at each other

What to do when you see something:

  • Stay a safe distance away
  • Take note of the person’s appearance (sex, height, physical appearance, clothing, etc.)
  • Get the vehicle description (make, model, color, license plate number)
  • Take photos if possible
  • Write down your observations with the time if possible

Call 911 if:

  • the event could be a crime in progress
  • the event is a physical altercation or is an escalating verbal altercation

Call the non-emergency numbers if:

  • the activity is suspicious but not an active crime
  • there is no threat of harm to someone or property

How observant are you?
