The idea behind Mental Health Awareness Month is to take away some of the stigma that exists when we talk about mental health. The stigma centers, not just around people with mental health issues and the impact it can have on individuals and communities, but also on being able to admit when help is needed to get through a challenging time in life, one which might have a significant impact on long term mental health.
While some of us cannot imagine why someone would have an issue talking to a therapist or licensed professional, there are others who still see it in a negative light. It can be so difficult, in fact, that the average delay of the onset of mental illness and treatment is 11 years. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be that long!
Personally, I like to think if mental health professionals as weight lifting spotters. When the emotional and mental load get too heavy to carry on our own (and it happens to everyone), it’s nice to have someone there to provide just enough support to help lift the weight into place so we can safely let it go.
Finding the right professional is important. For some, a simple conversation with your doctor might be sufficient for you to find the help you need. For others, finding someone who can dig a little deeper into the root cause of the issues is ideal for a long term solution. Whatever the solution might be, reaching out for help is the first step.
